Emma achieved straight As at A-level, along with a 1 in S-level English Literature. She pursued a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at Durham University, graduating with a 2:1 in 1996. The English department at Durham consistently ranked among the top three universities in the UK for English Literature over the past 25 years. Her university coursework covered a wide range of subjects, including Shakespeare, Victorian literature, Post-Colonial literature, Thomas Hardy, George Elliot, TS Elliot, Modernism, Chaucer, and Romanticism.
Following her university studies, Emma spent two years at the College of Law, initially studying for the Common Practice Exam and subsequently completing the Legal Practice Course. Her legal career commenced at Herbert Smith, where she began as a paralegal before advancing to qualify as a solicitor with SJ Berwin. She spent over a decade working in the City, specialising in Corporate Real Estate, and later transitioning into the role of a legal head-hunter.
After a career break focused on starting and raising her family, Emma chose to return to her true passion: English Literature. In 2018, she started training to become an English teacher. Her training included a full-time program with GITEP, involving a SCITT and a PGCE from Bristol University. Since obtaining her teaching qualification, Emma has dedicated herself to the education field, teaching English Literature and English Language at schools in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire for the past three years. Additionally, she has embraced the role of a private tutor. Her love for teaching stems from her ability as a teacher to help a child understand and learn. As a teacher, Emma is often commended for her extensive subject knowledge, calm demeanour, enthusiasm and humour.
Emma specializes in tutoring English Literature and English Language at Key Stages 3, 4, and 5. Emma can adapt her teaching to align with the requirements of any exam board, and she is particularly familiar with AQA and Eduquas.
